Statement of Purpose:

Art Museum.

• To maintain galleries,libraries, schools and institutes for the appreciation and study of art.
• To acquire, hold and preserve paintings, tapestries, books, manuscripts, scientific collections and objects of fine and industrial arts.
• To exhibit works of art.

As the city's largest visual arts resource, the San Diego Museum of Art has also expanded from a small community art gallery to one of the nation's top medium-sized regional art institutions housing a collection of more than 12,000 art objects.

The San Diego Museum of Art is located in the center of Balboa Park, "the cultural heart of San Diego."

The permanent collection, housed in a distinctive two-story Spanish colonial building, is renowned for the sophisticated collection of Italian Renaissance and Spanish baroque art.

In addition to the impressive permanent collection, the San Diego Museum of Art hosts several international traveling exhibitions annually.
