To collect, preserve and interpret the works of Mississippi artist Walter Inglis Anderson, and other significant artists as well. The museum opened in May of 1991 and is located in the historic district of downtown Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The museum presents a varied calendar of exhibitions, educational programs and events throughout the year to a growing audience from across the Gulf Coast Region and beyond. The museum is connected to the Ocean Springs Community Center which contains the 2500 square foot murals completed by Walter Anderson in 1951, which depicts the native american culture and the landing of French explorers in 1699. Two other mural projects are available for viewing in the museum, the WPA mural "Ocean Springs, Past and Present" and the Little Room from the artist's cottage. Walter Anderson's art is a celebration of the plants, animals and human presence on the Gulf Coast.
The growing Permanent Collection features over 500 works of art by Walter Anderson and artifacts that belonged to the artist.
