Statement of Purpose:

A regional museum of art, history and science with permanent and changing exhibitions and related educational progamming, publications, and other activities.

Extensive permanent collections in the fields of art, history and science relate to the history and pre-history of NE WI and the UP of MI.

A special local newspaper photo and early local TV news film collections are of unique interest to researchers of the region's past.

Highlights:

7,500 sq. ft. permanent exhibit, ON THE EDGE of THE INLAND SEA, uses thousands of artifacts, historic photos & film, etc. to trace the pre-history and history of NE WI from the end of the last Ice Age to the present.

Also--two floors of galleries with changing exhibits feature art, history and science displays (many containing interactive components such as videos, computers, and other hands-on elements); TAM, the "Transparent Anatomical Mannikin;" regularly scheduled educational programs and activities; access (by appointment) to the research library and collections; outreach program; gift shop featuring a wide selection of hard-to-find Native American and regional books, original artwork and craft items, children's items, and so on.
