Welcome to Omniplex, an amusement park for the mind!

Where science electrifies, aerospace takes flight, technology surrounds, imagination blooms, and wonders never cease.

17 historical, art, and cultural collections and galleries.

Highlights & Collections:

Experience over 350 hands-on science exhibits, aviation and space artifacts and memorabilia dating from 1914 through the modern space program, botanical gardens and greenhouses, art and cultural galleries, Oklahoma's premiere public-access planetarium and Oklahoma's only large-format, dome-screen theater.

Oklahoma State Art Collection, sections of the Berlin Wall, pioneer aviator Wiley Post artifacts, memorabillia and artifacts from Oklahoma astronauts including Tom Stafford, Admiral Crowe's world hat collection, African artifacts and masks from Jenni Ethiopia Collection

Magic of Flight
OmniDome Theater

Soar through the history, science and technique of flying. From the first flight attempt to modern day maneuvers performed by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the large-format film focuses on flight as it exhibits the potential and importance of training and performance—vital elements to a pilot’s quest to fly.


 

In the Dark
Interactive exhibition
Through May 20, 2001
In the absence of sunlight, away from human eyes, entire worlds thrive in the dark. Discover what looms in the shadows in a new interactive exhibit, In the Dark, beginning Saturday, Feb. 10 through Sunday, May 20. In caves, at night, deep in the ocean and within the soil, life goes on. Explore the intriguing qualities of darkness and uncover mysteries of a natural world that may be unfamiliar to us.


 

Journey into Amazing Caves
OmniDome Theater
Through summer 2001
Rappel down sheer cliff faces, raft underground rivers and wiggle, crawl and squeeze through tiny passages as scientists explore unmapped areas of our world and reach the deepest known cave on the continent: one mile inside the earth. Take a trip to a world that might be described as an adventure to another planet in Journey into Amazing Caves showing in the OmniDome Theater. 


 

Spring Nights
Kirkpatrick Planetarium
Through June 21, 2001
This seasonal program shows you what to look for in the night sky. Identify the ancient constellations, planets and deep-sky objects. Show times are: weekdays, 2:30 p.m. and weekends, 1 and 3 p.m.

Brain Awareness Weekend
Education Event
April 7 and 8, 2001
Join the fun at the third annual, “The Brain’s the Thing” at Omniplex April 7 and 8. Presented by the Oklahoma Chapter of the Society of Neuroscience, students and adults can explore the fascinating functions of the brain. Learn how hand-eye coordination depends on the brain and how eating jellybeans can teach us about smells and tastes. Learn the effects of drug abuse, see brain cells through a microscope and learn about new neuroscience research at the University of Oklahoma. In addition, a special public lecture entitled “Gray Matters: The Brain Movie,” by Dr. John Pollock will begin at 5 p.m. on April 7 in the Eleanor Maurer Auditorium at Omniplex. 
 
 
 
Fiberworks
Kirkpatrick Galleries

View works by outstanding Oklahoma fiber artisans in the 22nd annual "Fiberworks" exhibit. Weavings, needlework, basketry, quilting, soft sculpture, knitting, crocheting, felt and other works primarily constructed of fiber will be showcased in this juried exhibition in the Kirkpatrick Galleries at Omniplex. See traditional crafts to innovative art in this eclectic show that honors quality workmanship and original designs. An opening reception will be held on April 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Kirkpatrick Galleries

View stunning images of the earth and sky in a photographic exhibition by Anthea Maton this spring at Omniplex. With extensive backgrounds in physics and the arts, Maton recently brought her two loves together by founding ArtScience Connections, a project that bridges the art/science divide. An opening reception for the artist is scheduled for April 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.


 

World’s Largest Math Event
Education Event
April 27, 2001
Compete in various hands-on math demonstrations and find the answers to tricky math equations at the World’s Largest Math Event. Paul Chika Emekwula, author of The Magic of Numbers, will be at Omniplex to discuss mathematics and present special activities.

This special Kirkpatrick Planetarium presentation features the Skidi Band of the Pawnee Native American Nation, and how they pattered their lives on the observations they made of the Earth and celestial phenomena.

Get answers to questions about gem and mineral collecting from expert lapidary artists from the Oklahoma Gem and Mineral Society. Take a look at various gem displays and get in on fun demonstrations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 18 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 19.


 

Oklahoma Watercolor Association 2001

Witness expressive watercolor paintings by members of the Oklahoma Watercolor Association in this annual juried show. A highly competitive exhibition, a nationally known watercolorist will judge the art. An opening reception for the artists will be held on May 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend.


 

Festival of the Flag

Adding to Omniplex’s permanent flag collection are 310 American flags assembled by native Oklahoman, Edward Lee Kennedy. Some are old, some new, some are hand-made, and others by machine, but all uniquely exhibit patriotism that dates back to the first American flag. See “Festival of the Flags” Memorial Day, May 28 through Sunday, July 8, 2001 at Omniplex and celebrate the history of the American flag.

Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss
Traveling Exhibit
June 1 ­ September 23, 2001
Discover the mysteries of the ocean's greatest depths in this deep-sea interactive exhibits that highlights newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, close-up views of deep-sea submersibles and shipwrecks including Titanic. Extreme Deep puts the technology necessary for deep-sea exploration in the hands of museum guests as they join explorers for ride in a replicated submersible to simulate a dive into the depths up to three miles. Journey to the ocean floor and discover what lies beneath.


 

The Living Sea
OmniDome Theater

Come face to face with a humpback whale, surf Hawaii’s gigantic waves, take a ride on some of the world’s roughest waters and dive into an enchanting underwater world. Covering 139 million square miles of our world’s surface, this marine adventure allows audiences to discover the aquatic world from top to bottom, while it celebrates the splendor and importance of the ocean and explores our relationship with this complex and fragile environment.

Adventure into space, build your own robot, enjoy art classes and meet Ms. Frizzle from Scholastic’s The Magic School Bus books and animated television program. Children entering Kindergarten through high school can experience new worlds of wonder and learning in these exciting interactive four-day camps, Tuesday through Friday each week. Camps involve exciting activities and experiments in science, technology, art and culture, and range from half to full day sessions.
