No visit to Springfield would be complete without a stop at the Quadrangle, a complex of four museums and the main branch of the Springfield Library, all conveniently arranged around a tree-shaded green. Welcoming visitors to the entrance of the Quadrangle at the corner of State and Chestnut streets stands Augustus Saint-Gaudens' statue of The Puritan, erected in 1899.

Statement of Purpose:

George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum - Opened in 1896 in the style of an Italian palazzo, the museum houses the vast collection of its Victorian namesake. Included are Japanese arms and armor, screens, lacquers and ceramics; Islamic rugs and decorative arts; one of the largest collections of Chinese cloisonne', outside the Orient; a Shinto wheel shrine; Sculpture Hall with early-20th-century casts of the world's great classical and Renaissance sculpture; and 19th century American paintings.

Hours:

Wednesday through Friday, noon-5 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.. Also Tuesday during July and August.
Group tours by appointment.

Admission & Directions:

$6 for adults; $2 for children ages 6-18; $3 for senior citizens and college students; free for children under 6 and members. Admission fee includes entry into all four Quadrangle museums. Admission is free to members of the Springfield Library & Museums and free on Fridays to Springfield residents with a current Springfield Library card.
