The mission of The New Detroit Science Center is to inspire Detroit area children and their families to discover and appreciate science, technology and engineering.
Michigan's only IMAX® Dome Theatre
The cutting-edge dome screen is three and one-half stories
tall, sixty-seven and one-half feet in diameter and incorporates the most
advanced projection and sound systems available in the world. The IMAX® Dome
experience wraps sight and sound around you like an astounding "techno-blanket,"
and allows you to truly experience film. One doesn't just "watch" a movie in the
IMAX® Dome Theatre; it's a revolutionary sensory celebration.
Digital Dome Planetarium
Our newest theater, opening in December, is the state-of-the-art Digital Dome Planetarium. In this virtual reality environment you'll not only be able to experience the
wonders of a star filled sky, but also fly among them. We'll travel the universe to experience nebulae, galaxies, supernovae and even journey into the depths of a black hole. This 120 seat theater puts you in the center of an awesome journey. The 50' wide, 3 story high planetarium
dome above you is transformed through the technical wizardry of the Digistar II star projector, Barco wide format video projectors, and other equipment into any destination in the Universe.
The Sparks Theater offers "spark-tacular" demonstrations using electricity. This breath-taking program demonstrates the power of magnetism and shows how light, sound, and heat affect the world. 1,000s of volts are generated during every Sparks Theater demonstration ... but don't worry, the Sparks Theater is very safe. The whole space is built within a Faraday cage, which keeps electromagnetic waves under control and ensures the safety of other activities throughout the Science Center.
The DaimlerChrysler Science Stage
presents live programs covering a wide range of science topics.
The Science Center pushes motion to the limit to make
Newtonian Physics not just relevant, but exciting! How does gravity affect the
moon, stars, and comets?
The Tilt-O-Rama says it all!
By lowering someone's center of gravity to about 5 feet
below their feet, Science Stage presenters become human pendulums. How do
astronauts maneuver in space with the absence of gravity? See it for yourself as
Science Stage presenters use the Air Car to drastically reduce the friction
between a person and the ground by hovering on a cushion of air.
Coming Soon - the Science Center presents the
quickest weight loss plan on Earth!
The Anti-Gravity Harness will allow you to feel like you're walking on the moon (where the influence of gravitational forces makes you feel six times lighter than you are here on Earth)!
The Matter and Energy Laboratory is home to more than 30 exhibits, including the Sparks Theater, which explores the fundamental principles of electricity and magnetism, energy conversion, and the property of matter.
The Waves and Vibrations Laboratory explores an immense range of wave phenomena, offering an awe-inspiring glimpse at the everyday world of light and sound.
The Life Sciences Laboratory features exhibits that focus on the similarities between the rain forest and city ecosystems.
The GM Motion Laboratory houses more than 30 exhibits, including the DaimlerChrysler Science Stage, which addresses classical mechanics and compare motion, speed and direction.
Ameritech Children's Gallery at The New Detroit Science Center provides a 4,000-square-foot space that allows the pre-kindergarten set to form an interest in science as play.
The Ford Learning Resource Center , an integral part of The New Detroit Science Center, is the home to five unique learning environments. Five classrooms offer hands-on, inquiry-based learning, professional development opportunities, educational resources and classroom curriculum enhancement.
