Statement of Purpose

Celebrating more than thirty years of service to Fort Bend County and the surrounding areas, the Fort Bend Museum Association preserves and interprets the regional history of the Fort Bend County area, with particular emphasis on the settlement and impact of Austin's Colony. The Museum Association's primary exhibits, collections, and public and educational programs focus on the Fort Bend Museum and the George Ranch Historical Park (please see http://www.artcom.com/museums/nv/gl/77406-12.htm for information about the George Ranch).

The Fort Bend Museum portrays Fort Bend County history from Austin's Colony in 1822 to 1945. The Fort Bend Museum Complex includes the Museum, the Long Smith Cottage, the 1883 John M. Moore Home, and the McFarlane House. At the Fort Bend Museum journey through time and experience life on the Brazos River and the Fort Bend story through dioramas and displays. Walk through galleries representing the 1821 settlement of Spanish Texas by Anglo American colonists and the role of Stephen F. Austin in that settlement; the Texas Revolution, its causes and the role of Fort Bend County in the encampment of the Mexican Army during the battle at San Jacinto, the plantation period of the 1850s and 1860s and the importance of the thriving sugar and cotton industries; the Civil War interpretation which centers on the role of B. F. Terry and Terry's Texas Rangers; and an exhibit on the contributions of the Czech and German immigrants to the development of Fort Bend County.

Highlights & Collections

The Fort Bend Museum presents Fort Bend County's history from Austin's Colony (1822) through the end of World War II (1945). Through compelling dioramas and displays, museum visitors can imagine life on the Brazos River and the Fort Bend story. Galleries interpret the 1821 settlement of Spanish Texas by Anglo American colonists and the role of Stephen F. Austin in that settlement; the Texas Revolution, its causes and the role of Fort Bend County in the encampment of the Mexican Army during the battle at San Jacinto, the plantation period of the 1850s and 1860s and the importance of the thriving sugar and cotton industries. The Civil War interpretation centers on the role of B. F. Terry and Terry's Texas Rangers.

The Fort Bend Museum Complex includes the Museum, the 1837 Long Smith Cottage, the 1883 John M. Moore Home, and the 1882 McFarlane House. The Museum also preserves and promotes the Richmond Historic District, which includes the Richmond Jail (1897), Decker Park (home of the McNabb House, circa 1850s; the Kochan-Reed House, circa 1890s; and the Richmond Depot, 1901) and more than 25 additional properties in town. The Museum serves as a liaison for the Fort Bend Archeological Society, a volunteer corps dedicated to the highest practices in archeological research and excavation on sites in Fort Bend County.

Temporary and traveling exhibits and other public programs enable the Museum to focus on other topics and time periods less closely related to its primary
focus.

Long-range strategic plans guides the Board of Trustees and staff of the Fort Bend Museum toward this mission.
